Ting Mobile 5G FAQs

What does 5G stand for?

5G is the fifth generation of wireless network technology.

What is 5G technology?

5G is the next generation of wireless network technology designed to expand the scope of mobile technology beyond the capabilities of LTE. With 5G, high amounts of data can be transmitted more efficiently than 4G LTE. That means more robust network reliability and faster downloads.

Does 5G coverage cost more?

At Ting Mobile, 5G access is included in our plans at no extra cost. Whichever plan you choose, you'll be able to benefit from 4G LTE and 5G with a compatible device.

Will 5G replace 4G?

5G isn't replacing 4G any time soon. Instead, they will coexist and work together. All 5G capable phones will be able to use both 4G and 5G technology.

Why is 3G going away?

3G is an outdated cellular technology that only allows limited data speeds. The majority of phones today use 4G LTE technology, while the next generation, 5G, is just beginning to be rolled out. There are limited frequency bands, and existing 2G and 3G networks are taking up precious space on these bands that 4G and 5G networks need to meet increased demand. As a result, the older networks are being shut down.

Are all phones capable of accessing a 5G network? How do I know if my phone is 5G compatible?

No, only phones with 5G-enabled hardware are compatible with 5G. If your phone is 5G compatible, you should see a 5G icon in the top bar of your phone when you're in an area with 5G coverage.

Can 3G or 4G phones be upgraded to 5G?

Unfortunately, no. To access 5G networks, you need a 5G-capable phone built with 5G-enabled hardware.

Where can I buy a 5G-capable phone?

Manufacturers are slowly releasing more 5G-capable phones, becoming widely available at most retailers. The Ting Mobile shop also has a great selection of 5G-capable phones clearly labeled with a "5G" sticker.

Is it worth it to upgrade to a 5G phone?

If you're not looking to upgrade and are already on a 4G LTE phone with VoLTE enabled, you might not want to upgrade to a 5G phone. If you are considering an upgrade, though, you may want to consider a 5G phone to start taking advantage of the benefits of 5G and be equipped for all the future benefits.

Where does Ting Mobile offer 5G coverage?

Mid-band 5G reaches nearly 410 cities and towns across the country, adding more and more. In deployed places, average download speeds are already around 7.5x faster than today's average LTE speeds—with peak download speeds up to 1 Gbps.
